- Overestimating the likelihood of negative events: If we are constantly bombarded with negative news and information, it can lead us to overestimate the likelihood of adverse events happening to us. This can make us feel anxious and stressed.
- Underestimating the likelihood of positive events: If we are not paying attention to positive information, we may minimise the likelihood of positive events happening to us. This can make us feel pessimistic and hopeless.
- Making bad decisions: If we are more influenced by negative information, we may make decisions that are not in our best interests. For example, we may avoid taking risks because we fear failure.
There are several things that we can do to overcome our negativity bias. Here are a few tips:
- Pay attention to positive information: Seek positive information and experiences. This includes reading positive news stories, spending time with positive people, or doing things that make you happy.
- Challenge your negative thoughts: When you have negative thinking, ask yourself if it is true. Is there another way to look at the situation?
- Focus on the good: When you are feeling down, take some time to focus on the good things in your life. Make a list of all the things you're grateful for.
- Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment without judgment. This can help you to become more aware of your thoughts and feelings and to challenge negative thinking patterns.
Negativity bias is a common cognitive bias, but it is one that we can overcome. By being aware of our bias and taking steps to challenge it, we can improve our mental health and make better decisions.
