Our Public Speaking Course returns to VAI
In Feb 2020, after a great deal of soul-searching and ten years of occupancy, our world-famous Public Speaking Course, planned to move training venues. Our room hire demands had outgrown VAI’s capacity, and we signed a deal with a large venue hire company nearby. As a result, we would have an exclusive workspace for the first time with a lock, keys, and cabinets to store our training materials. Transporting equipment to King's Cross every day is one of my least favourite pastimes. Things were looking good, but due to Covid, the plan was cancelled, and we never moved in. Indeed, there were no face-to-face classes until we resumed on July 19th 2021.
Throughout the operational hiatus, the nature of the business’s finances changed, as did its staff composition. However, what inspired me most as we prepared to return to the classroom was the welcoming support of the staff at Voluntary Action Islington. Under new Chief Executive Navinder Kaur, the venue had undergone significant updates and refurbishment, and they did everything possible to welcome us back to our spiritual home.
The Voluntary sector too, had experienced difficulties. London is a transient city, people come and go. When the lockdown came, many moved back to their origins, leaving a significant gap in the voluntary sector’s ability to deliver.
Having dealt with austerity, then Covid and Brexit, the voluntary sector bounces back with new initiatives. They call one project “Let’s Talk Islington”, where community groups, the voluntary sector and Islington Council are working in partnership to support grassroots growth.
The atmosphere at Voluntary Action Islington is always vibrant and exemplifies community integration, diversity representation, understanding and collaboration. It’s a beautiful place to work.
Through our occupancy at Voluntary Action Islington, the College of Public Speaking is proud to support the voluntary sector, its initiatives, and aspirations. We have always worked closely with VAI to offer training solutions to its staff and the voluntary sector at large. We’re looking forward to better times ahead.
We're delighted to offer our Public Speaking Course once more in King's Cross, London. It's never too late to develop a vital skill.
